Chicago GED
Since I live in Chicago, IL, I wanted to offer some advice to people wanting Chicago GED information. My best advice is to start backwards. Let me tell you what that means.
If getting an immediate job is your final goal, contact some prospective employers and ask if they would accept a GED instead of a high school degree. If you have friends with high school degrees working in Chicago or suburbs, ask them where they work. Then call those employers. If you hope to pass your GED and apply for a job, it would be a good idea to know what types of employers are hiring both GED and high school graduates.
If passing the GED test is a bridge to attending college in Chicago, you might want to speak to a few admissions counselors at local colleges. For example, if you live near Wilson Avenue by Truman College, call or visit them. Dress as if it’s a job interview, introduce yourself, ask if they accept GED graduates at the college, and ask their advice. You might be surprised to find them offfering a GED program you don’t know about. Good idea.
In Chicago you might visit DeVry near Belmont and Western to speak to admissions at that location. Don’t forget the University of Illinois located just west of Halsted.
After researching employers and colleges, you know a bit more about who will readily accept your GED, and who might ask for more requirements.
Your next step is locating Chicago GED test sites. Visiting Cook County GED is a very good way to start. Don’t assume that the sites are open and that the dates are correct. Call or visit a site to confirm the date and requirements for taking the GED test. Taking a GED test is an all day event so you might want to choose a site that actually feels comfortable to you. Feeling comfortable in a test environment might actually help you perform a little better.
Finally, passing the GED test in Illinois requires passing a U.S. constitution test. This is a special Illinois requirement. If you’re rusty on the U.S. constitution and Illinois history, you might want to visit Barbara Daley’s Constitution Study Guide.
In my research I have found some organizations that offer different types of study help for the GED test in Chicago and Illinois. If you contact the college admissions officers as I suggested and ask them for advice, you’ll soon find places that offer GED classes.
Good luck and best wishes on getting your GED in Chicago.
